How to choose your metal clamp ?

hose clamp types

A hose clamp is used in the mechanical field to tighten hoses and is also used on gas, compressed air or hydraulic lines. Choosing the right metal hose clamp for the right application depends on parameters such as the pressure it can exert, the medium it is used in or the type of steel it is made of. Once these parameters have been reviewed, the choice is naturally made.

Scope of application

The purpose of a pipe clamp is to ensure the proper functioning and connection of a pipe. The most frequent fields of application are domestic appliances (gas cooker, dishwasher...), automotive, chemical or mechanical. While the basic principle remains the same, i.e. that a hose clamp consists of a clamping band, a screw holder and a clamping screw, the various models are designed to hold hoses in place, whether they are used to convey compressed air, non-aggressive or, on the contrary, aggressive fluids. This is where the different characteristics of hose clamps come into play.

Corrosion resistance

The advantage of metal hose clamps is their increased strength. However, this does not guarantee that it will not deteriorate over time and, depending on the environment to which it will be exposed, corrosion will be more or less severe. Metal hose clamps are divided into six categories (W1 to W5 according to DIN 3014) depending on their composition, and each category has its own level of corrosion resistance. In order to make the right choice, depending on the intended use of the metal hose clamp, it is essential to know its corrosion resistance level, which will tell you whether it is susceptible to rust and when it is likely to rust.

Resistance to pressure

A hose clamp does its job if it exerts constant pressure on the hose, holding it in place and preventing any risk of leakage. The hose and the hose clamp to be applied to it must be optimally matched. If the clamp is too large for the diameter of the hose, it will tend to relax when the pressure inside the hose is high. Conversely, if it is too short, it will exert too much pressure on the hose, with a risk of the hose breaking. Take your measurements and be precise so as not to skimp on safety.

The different types of metal clamps

When the previous parameters have been taken into account, you can compare the different types of hose clamps available on the market.

The open-ended band clamp

It has the advantage of being modular, by which we mean that its clamping can be easily adapted without risk of breakage. It is a very widespread model. Its adaptability makes it a clamp recommended for simple use with non-aggressive fluids. It is perfect to be placed on a dishwasher or washing machine hose or on a garden hose.

The necklace with a full stamped band

In contrast to the type mentioned above, the collar with pressed solid band is not intended to be modulated but is compact and designed not to move once in place. Very efficient in terms of tightening, heat resistant, its use is recommended in the automotive industry.

The trunnion clamp

It too has a solid strip, but this time two housings are welded on it to accommodate a screw and a lock nut. It is a limited clamp, it will be intended to be placed on a pipe whose diameter will have been measured beforehand. It has multiple uses, in cases where high pressures are exerted, especially on thick and reinforced pipes.

The clamp with one or two ears

Again, this is a clamp that is placed on a hose with a specific diameter. It is not intended for troubleshooting because it is installed with a hose clamp and, if it needs to be replaced, this can only be done by cutting it off. The quick-fit device is used for compressed air or spraying equipment, especially in agriculture.
